Don’t forget your exhibition stand flooring.

There was a time, not so long ago, when exhibition flooring was made of one material, came in one size and was available in two colours – black and a slightly lighter black called grey. These days the choice of flooring is almost unlimited. But choosing an exhibition stand floor is more than just a practical choice.

Despite this, after the walling, lighting and furniture, flooring is very often left until last – a bit of an afterthought. More often than not, companies will choose a budget-friendly hard-wearing carpet in a neutral colour, anything as long as it doesn’t clash with the other stand elements too much. Not many stop to think that the flooring could actually be used to reinforce a brand or stand theme.

Coloured carpet is without doubt the simplest choice. It’s hardwearing and cheap. But don’t just opt for a neutral, non-offensive colour like a grey or dark blue. You can find carpet in just about every colour and pattern, so why not be different and find something that complements your brand of the theme of the stand.

Those who are a bit more creative and don’t mind spending that little bit extra might consider continuing the stand branding on the floor. Almost any graphics can be printed on to almost any floor, creating a strong continuous colour and theme across the stand. If your company has a particularly strong and photogenic logo, why not have it printed on to the flooring.

If you want to move away from carpet or lino tiles, why not think about giving your flooring some texture and making a feature of it by using a wooden or metal surface? If you have a larger stand, you could use flooring to indicate separate spaces, say a carpeted meeting space and a wooden floor for display or demonstration areas.

If you’re planning on keeping it, make sure that the flooring can be easily stored, shipped and installed. However spectacular it is, you don’t want to be hanging around while it’s stuck in a depot somewhere or wasting time twiddling your thumbs because it takes engineers a whole day to install.

Because of this interlocking floors have become increasingly popular in recent years. Easily portable and quick to install, and with a variety of different styles and colours available, the blocks can also be configured to meet the shape and size of your space stand exactly.

There really is no limit when it comes to choosing suitable flooring for your exhibition stand – just the depth of your imagination and the size of your wallet.

Getting the best from your exhibition stand lighting

So you’ve booked your space at a kay industry event. You’ve commissioned your exhibition stand, designed your graphics and ordered your furniture. It’s all too easy to get caught up in the design and functionality. But have you considered what kind of lighting you want? If you want to maximise impact and draw visitors to your stand, the way in which your stand and displays are lit is crucial.

By carefully considering the different lighting options and techniques available, exhibitors can truly transform an exhibition space, creating inspirational spaces that stand out from the crowd and deliver real ROI. Having invested in a great-looking stand, you want to make sure that you create an impact and effect that entices visitors to engage with you and your products.

Increasingly, exhibitors and exhibition stand designers are looking to the retail environment for inspiration, which makes sense when you think about it. In essence, exhibitions are high-pressure sales environments where you use lighting to best display your products, capture attention, increase dwell time and improve conversion rates.

When choosing your lighting, use it to create the mood you’d like on your stand, as you would do in your home. Likewise, think in terms of all three dimensions of your stand. As with a room in your house, there isn’t just a light on the ceiling. You might also have lamps on the walls, ceiling and floors which light certain areas of the room.

So, what are the options when it comes to standard LED lighting? There are four colour temperatures (shades of white light) which are categorised as warm, natural (or neutral), day white and cool white. Which one you choose will depend on the mood you want to create and how much light is going to be emitted by other fixtures and fittings such as video walls, iPad and laptop screens.

Warm White is generally used in residential settings, has a pinkish-yellow hue and adds a sense of softness, making it ideal for the more relaxed areas of your stand such as any comfortable seating. Natural or Neutral White has a true white appearance, so it’s particularly good for illuminating graphics on a wall or creating an energetic feel in a particular area of your stand.

If you’re planning to demonstrate a product, then the industrial lighting effect of Day White is generally recommended. Alternatively, Cool White gives off a clean bright light with a bluish tinge and is often found in hospitals, so it’s the ideal light when showcasing technology.

Highlighting certain areas of your stand, such as branding or product displays, will naturally draw the eye to that particular area, so if you’re launching a new product it should take centre stage. Even on a bright stand, make sure that any featured element stands out above all others using spotlights which are small, unobtrusive and can be directed on a focal point.

If you want to create a striking illuminated exhibition stand that delivers maximum visual impact, consider using LED lightboxes. These come in all shapes and sizes and can be placed anywhere – freestanding columns at floor level, hanging from the walls, integrated into stand walls or double-sided boxes on a rig high above the stand.

Uplighter boxes are a different way to ‘wash’ a wall with light, a subtle and dramatic affect that helps create a mood or atmosphere. While LED strip lighting is a good way to ‘flood’ a whole wall with light and is particularly effective at illuminating graphics.

And if you really want to go to town with your lighting, consider neon signage, illuminated shelving, a combination of general and accented colour lighting, or if you’re particularly daring you could use lighting to change the look of your space throughout the day using programmable LEDs. But that’s for the really brave amongst you.

Integrating LED Video Walls into your exhibition stand graphics.

As they become increasingly cost-effective, a cost that can often be offset against the large amount of exposure you can achieve over a short period of time, LED video walls have quickly become the go-to technology for creating an eye-catching and memorable exhibition stand. Whether promoting your brand or a particular product, they are perfect for engaging with stand visitors and passers-by.

The improvement in LED and LCD technology now means that the size of a display can be almost limitless with very little compromise on visual quality. This makes video walls and digital signage displays provide the perfect canvas on which to showcase content and deliver information at exhibitions and conferences.

But before you leap into purchasing or hiring any visual technology, there are a number of factors you must consider. Otherwise, your efforts are destined to fail. First of all, you must consider any business goals associated with the strategy. How will a video wall improve the promotion of your message as oppose to the current methods of promotion you are using at exhibitions?

Once you’ve decided to integrate a video wall into your exhibition stand, it’s imperative that you understand the space that you’ll be occupying. This will enable you to determine the appropriate size, brightness, pixel pitch, resolution and power requirement of screen display – these are all factors that will affect the impact of your display.

If wall space on your stand is limited, you might only want a single large screen. Alternatively, if you have a larger space, you could combine a series of individual screens to create a seamless unified display. Or if you’re feeling more creative, you could configure the screens in a random scattered pattern which complements the design of your stand and/or artwork.

Next, you’ll need to optimise the content (videos, images, audio and text) for the type of video wall you’ll be using. While maintaining proportion, these should be as large and clear as possible. Remember, while the content may look fantastic on a laptop screen, it may not do so when displayed on a much larger of a video wall.

When creating the content, there are several factors to bear in mind. Short, simple messages are always more effective on a digital screen, and make sure that it’s in a large format, in a sans serif font and evenly spaced. Visitors will not be sitting comfortably when they read your message; they’ll be passing and glancing while surrounded by a million and one other distractions.

And if integrating a video wall into you exhibition stand graphics isn’t adventurous enough for you, interactive video walls enhance engagement and deliver a continuously immersive viewer experience, either by using a touch display or via an application on a mobile device that augments the content.
